A Long White Cloud
One Maori legend tells of a voyager, Kupe, who was tugged by a great octopus into cool seas and found a great uninhabited land he named Aotearoa, commonly translated as 'a long white cloud'. This, it is said. led to the Polynesian voyages a few generations later, the voyagers becoming the 'Maori' inhabitants of what, subsequent, West European explorers called 'New Zealand'.
